Sometimes banknotes soar in value due to some historic or newsworthy event. For example, various European banknotes greatly increased in value where they were replaced with the new Euro currency. Hong Kong notes doubled or even tripled in value around the time of the Chinese take-over. Many alert collectors and investors anticipate these rises in value and realise big profits be buying up the notes before they rise in value. Remember the recent volcano in Monserrat? One month, Monserrat notes were just as desirable as any other East Caribbean State banknote. As soon as the volcano rendered the island uninhabitable, shrewd dealers and collectors world-wide bought every Monserrat note they could obtain, knowing that it was unlikely that any more would be printed.

Gold bullion coins usually come in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 and 1/20 oz. sizes. Most countries have one design that remains constant each year; others have variations each year, and in most cases each coin is dated. A 1/10th oz bullion coin is about the same size as a U.S. dime. A 1 oz. gold bullion coin is about the size of a U.S. half dollar.

According to the World Gold Council, annual mine production of gold over the last few years has been close to 2,500 tonnes. About 3,000 tonnes goes into jewelry or industrial/dental production, and around 500 tonnes goes to retail investors and exchange traded gold funds. This translates to an annual demand for gold to be 1000 tonnes in excess over mine production which has come from central bank sales and other disposal.

The most common luster seen on United States gold coins, especially those from the 19th century, is frosty in texture. Frosty luster can be extremely attractive. I would describe it to the new collector as having a hard look and it is most associated, in my experience, with coins produced at the Philadelphia and San Francisco mints.

The performance of gold bullion is often compared to stocks. They are fundamentally different asset classes: gold is a store of value whereas stocks are a return on value (i.e. growth plus dividends). Stocks and bonds perform best in a stable political climate with strong property rights and little turmoil. The attached graph shows the value of Dow Jones Industrial Average divided by the price of an ounce of gold. Since 1800, stocks have consistently gained value in comparison to gold due in part to the stability of the American political system. This appreciation has been cyclical with long periods of stock outperformance followed by long periods of gold outperformance. The Dow Industrials bottomed out a ratio of 1:1 with gold during 1980 (the end of the 1970s bear market) and proceeded to post gains throughout the 1980s and 1990s. The ratio peaked on January 14th, 2000 a value of 41.3 and has fallen sharply since. William Anton III wrote in the 2004 issue of Jefferson Coin and Bullion "...downward movement in the Dow/gold ratio is unlikely to stop precisely at the mean trendline. The extreme distension of the the 90s will likely overshoot to the opposite extreme in the current cycle."

The ever-growing availability of cheap and varied material from around the world has already brought the hobby of paper money collecting well within reach of even those on the tightest budget. This is one collecting field where prices are actually falling in many areas, mainly where new issues are concerned. For this, we can thank the effects of inflation. In comparison to western countries, many countries have steep inflation rates, making their currency sink in value in relation to our own. Thus, their currency notes become ever cheaper for us to obtain. Some typical cases from recent years include Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Russia, Zaire, Iraq, Yugoslavia and Turkey. In fact, we can even obtain notes with denominations of 50,000,000,000 or more for a dollar or two! Another exciting source of very cheap notes has recently emerged: the new ex-Soviet republics. Here is an opportunity to obtain the very first issues of several new republics for mere pennies. One can only imagine the value these first issues will have to collectors in future years.

The best type of pick box for finding honest to goodness bargains is the flat-rate so-called "junk box." These are boxes into which the dealer has thrown coins that he has determined are not worth his time to catalog and price individually. Sometimes coins get thrown in there just because they're low grade. Other times, the coins might be high grade but just really common. Some dealers even throw in their "attribution challenges!" This latter type of pick box is, by far, the most profitable and most interesting for the cherrypicker! In reality though, most pick boxes contain a mixture of two or more categories of these types of coins. (Attribution challenges are coins that the dealer can't find in his coin catalogs. These are most often seen in World coins, but I've even found genuine U.S. Pre-Federal Colonial Copper coins in junk boxes marked "Misc. Tokens - $2 Each.")
