As an aside, it is interesting how poorly high denomination U.S. notes have performed as an investment. Anyone would have fared much, much better by depositing the $500 or $1,000 in even a low-interest savings account in the 1940's or 1950's when these circulated, as the return would have been much higher than on a $500 or $1,000 bill. In fact, the return on $5,000 and $10,000 bills is very poor compared to other investments-yes, even the stock market, where despite the bear market of the last couple of years, $5,000 or $10,000 invested in stocks when these notes were printed would be worth many multiples of what these notes are now worth. The moral is, of course, that if you are "hanging on" to high denomination notes in the hopes that they are a good investment and will be worth much more one day, history is not encouraging.

This article is about the Ten rarest Liberty Head eagles. Notice that I didn’t say “the ten most popular” or “the ten most expensive.” Readers may be surprised that this top ten list does not include any Carson City issues (although I was tempted to include the 1870-CC) and just one ...]

2009 Native American $1 Coin Rolls Issued Jan. 15

Tue, 13 Jan 2009 15:13:48 +0000

2009 Native American $1 Coin designs and coin rollsThe United States Mint will officially introduce the 2009 Native American $1 Coin on Saturday and issue 25-coin rolls of them Thursday, Jan. 15, according to a Mint media advisory and web site product pages.

2009 is the first year for the new coins, which bear the familiar Sacagawea obverse or heads side design introduced in 2000 and a new reverse design depicting a Native American woman planting seeds in a field of corn, beans and squash (representing the Three Sisters method of planting).

The Native American $1 Coin Act mandates a different design every year as well as an equal mintage with each yearly Presidential $1 coin.

The Mint unveiled the 2009 Native American designs during Native American Heritage Day in November, added them to its Direct Ship Program on Jan. 2, and will sale 25-coin rolls on Thursday with either the Philadelphia "P" or Denver "D" mintmark.

Whether you are buying from a bricks and mortar dealer or buying online through a website or an auction site like EBay, check the reliability of the dealer. For a store, at least check with the local Better Business Bureau. If the dealer is a member of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG), that is a big plus. For an EBay auction, check the seller's feedback rating. If it's very low, or there are many negatives, think twice before spending a large sum with them. On large ticket items, ask if the seller will agree to use Escrow.com. They act as a middleman and the money doesn't pass to the seller until the buyer is satisfied with the item. The buyer will pay a charge, but it's well worth it when big money is changing hands.

As with most U.S. $1 Silver Certificates, most circulated $5 and $10 Silver Certificates only carry a small premium over face value, ranging from 10% to 30%. Uncirculated $5 and $10 Silver Certificates carry a larger premium, depending on the issue and the grade. There are several significantly scarcer and even rare varieties in these series, however, including the 1933 $10 Silver Certificate, the 1953-B $5 Silver Certificate Star Note, and others, and most Star notes from these series carry some premium (ranging from small to large) over the regular notes. Again, please refer to the Standard Guide to Small Size U.S. Paper Money (1928 to date), by Dean Oakes and John Schwartz, for more information.

The famous American Buffalo gold coin now has the first 24-Karat solid gold bullion coin from the United States Mint. A final area of coin investing to consider are the bullion coins, especially coins that are traded at close to spot price (as opposed to Proof Silver Eagles and other premium U.S. Mint offerings.) With the growth of China and India and the likelihood that they will become "superpowers" within the next generation, all precious metals are expected to rise over the long term. Copper, in particular, is expected to boom compared to current prices.

Stellas invariably sell in high-profile auctions and are generally unattainable through private sale. This is the only generally available Stella, from a mintage variously registered as from about 425 to slightly over 700. Of course, the term--available--is relative, and in comparison to demand for such pieces, coins of this quality are indeed rare.

"Some of the so-called 'Obama coins' are layered or plated with a microscopically-thin layer of gold with the implication that they are potentially valuable bullion items. However, there usually is precious little precious metal value to plated pieces. Beware of bogus bargains," Adkins cautioned.
