The U.S. star or replacement note displays a star as a suffix on Federal Reserve notes. A star is used to replace defective notes found during the inspection process at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Since the highest number that can be printed by an eight-digit numbering cylinder is 99,999,999, a star has been used to denote the 100,000,000th note off the press. Historically, star notes hold a value slightly higher than the legal-tender value, with the amount dependent on condition and denomination

Gold bullion coins usually come in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 and 1/20 oz. sizes. Most countries have one design that remains constant each year; others have variations each year, and in most cases each coin is dated. A 1/10th oz bullion coin is about the same size as a U.S. dime. A 1 oz. gold bullion coin is about the size of a U.S. half dollar.

Throughout time, from the Greek and Roman ages to more modern times, civilizations flourished with sound money. The gold coin has proved to be the time-tested answer for societies desiring economic prosperity. The alternative, fiat currency, has resulted in the demise of prosperous civilizations since Roman times. The word "fiat" means by government edict. It is simply impossible for a government to magically proclaim sound money and reliable purchasing power of wealth with paper currency. This fact prompts Americans to consider investing in gold coins.

Be especially careful not to push dirt around a coin's surface. Coins are generally made of soft metals, so anything harder than them (like small rocks) will leave scratches that can destroy the coin's value.

50 State Quarters® Program Concludes as the Most Successful Coin Initiative in U.S. History

Program Nets Nearly $3 Billion from Increased Quarter Demand over Decade

United States Mint State QuarterWASHINGTON - The United States Mint is wrapping up the 50 State Quarters® Program, the national phenomenon that sent Americans searching through their change for the latest quarter to add to their collections.  It is estimated that 147 million Americans have been collecting the coins in the 10-year 50 State Quarters Program, which has honored each state in the order it ratified the U.S. Constitution or was admitted into the Union.  The program, authorized by Congress, kicked off in early 1999 with the introduction of the Delaware quarter and concludes at the end of 2008 with the Hawaii commemorative quarter-dollar coin.

"This groundbreaking initiative has been the most successful coin program in the Nation's history," said United States Mint Director Ed Moy, who participated in the launch ceremony for the Hawaii quarter on November 10, 2008.  "The 50 State Quarters Program has educated a generation of Americans about the history and geography of the States.  It has also generated tremendous state pride and encouraged citizens to consider which images should symbolize the region where they live."

Paper Money & Coin Collecting News

Cherrypicking dealer stock, such as the boxes of slabbed coins or 2x2's, generally requires that you have a lot of back and forth interaction with the dealer. Typically, he'll hand you one box at a time to look through, and if you're fast, you might be pestering him several times in a short period of time for more coins to check. In such a scenario, it is important to be courteous and patient, and to only pull out and set aside the coins that you are pretty sure you're going to buy. The reason is that the dealer must go to several different places to put back any unsold coins you've pulled out.

On my list of "do not buy" coins is those from the Franklin Mint and other premium collectibles mints (such as the Bradford Exchange, etc.) They are aggressive marketers who do sell genuine bullion coins (sometimes) but their coins usually do not have any after-market value among coin collectors and investors. You'll typically pay $45 plus for a one ounce silver coin that is only worth the value of its silver bullion when you go to sell it. (Silver bullion is at about $19 an ounce as I write this.)

A popular form of cherrypicking in coin collecting is done at coin shows, when the cherrypicker carefully scrutinizes dealer stock, looking for die varieties that the dealer has overlooked. A more low-end form of coin show cherrypicking is searching through the pick bins and junk boxes trying to find coins that are worth substantially more than the dealer asking price.

The International Bank Note Society was formed in 1961 and was one of the first clubs for collectors of paper money (along with the SPMC - Society of Paper Money Collectors formed the same year). The IBNS focuses on collectors of world paper money while the SPMC targets mainly collectors of U.S. notes.
